High levels of lead found in water of Dublin homes

The Irish Times recently reported that lead contamination levels up to 80 times the legal limit were detected in the drinking water of a number of Dublin homes.

Irish Water identified homes with levels ranging from five to a staggering 80 times the legal limit set by the EU.

Consumption of lead can affect brain development, with young children, infants and “babies in the womb” most at risk, according to the HSE and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The report states that lead may also harm kidneys, contribute to high blood pressure and has been linked to cancer, according to a joint paper from the State agencies.
